Surface Engineering by Expanded Austenite
The Team
We are two Mechanical Engineering students who have completed our Bachelors with Honours at the University of Strathclyde and are now in our Masters year. We
decided to partake in the Erasmus Exchange programme and we our doing our group project together at Chalmers University of Technology, in the fantastic city of Gothenburg in Sweden. We were friends before we came to Sweden and have worked with each other many times in the past so we know exactly what each others strengths and weaknesses are and how to work best with each other.
Having taken the Keirsey personallity test and Jung's personality we both came out as two different types of leaders. This dynamic allows the project to be tackled with much enthusiasm as both personallites are keen to succeed and we enjoy a challenge. We see this group as a partnership as both personalities strive to be at the front. This allows the project to stay focused and with many tasks being two-men-jobs, it is an ideal scenario. With only two people in group it can be an advantage as there is no slacking or laziness; tasks can be divided in a simpler easier manner and it allows for optimum support for each other.
After conducting the both the Keirsey Personallity Test and Jung’s Personallity test, the outcome was that I have the ENTJ personality “The Commander”.
The description from www.16personallities.com
“ENTJs are natural-born leaders. People with this personality type embody the gifts of charisma and confidence, and project authority in a way that draws crowds together behind a common goal. But unlike their Feeling (F) counterpart, ENTJs are characterized by an often ruthless level of rationality, using their drive, determination and sharp minds to achieve whatever end they've set for themselves… lest they overwhelm the more timid and sensitive personality types that make up much of the rest of the world – but we have ENTJs to thank for many of the businesses and institutions we take for granted every day.”
Strengths of an ENTJ:
-
Efficient
-
Energetic
-
Self-Confident
-
Strong-Willed
-
Strategic Thinkers
-
Charismatic and Inspiring
Weaknesses of an ENTJ:
-
Stubborn and Dominant
-
Intolerant
-
Impatient
-
Arrogant
-
Poor Handling of Emotions
-
Cold and Ruthless
My strengths revolve round striving to get work done efficiently and inspiring others to do the same thing. This drive can also be a weakness as it can make me stubborn and insistent that people do tasks to my likings, making me appear to be cold and ruthless. However I also value different opinions, and can lead and inspire others to help me achieve things that I could not otherwise do myself. This gives me the ability to work together as a team, pushing the project forward.
Having my strengths and weaknesses pointed out, allows me to focus on working effectively as a group and that I should be more sensitive towards others, taking into account their feelings; what I might think as impersonal and just business, other people in my group may take it personally which would be detrimental to the group dynamic.

After undertaking a ‘Kieirsey Personality Test’ and ‘Jung Human-metrics Typology Test,’ both tests resulted in myself being of an ‘EN’ personality type. This meaning:
Extraverted Intuition.
The Keirsey test revealed this personality type to come under the ‘idealist’ umbrella. ENJFs are natural leaders and teachers, capable of engaging and figuring out how to actively bringing out the best in others. Their natural intuition makes them aware of others around them. They excel in communication and so have a strong deal of influence in group environments. They also value organisation and routine, resulting in them being efficient and competently working to deadline.
The Jungs test further revealed that I was of an ENFJ personality. That being:
Extraverted Intuition Feeling Judging.
ENFJ’s have great belief in themselves, but can also see the ‘bigger picture,’ allowing them to handle numerous projects and responsibilities simultaneously. Thus they are re-known for their reliable handling of stressful situations.
The joy they take in guiding others gives them great motivational skills, while also being tolerant and respectful of the opinions of others.
However an ENFJ’s weakness is that they can at times be too focused on others instead of themselves and that at times they can struggle to make decisions.
Strengths of an ENFJ:
-
Tolerance
-
Reliability
-
Charisma
-
Altruistic
-
Natural Leader
Weaknesses of an ENFJ:
-
Overly Idealistic
-
Too Selfless
-
Too Sensitive
-
Fluctuating Self-Esteem
-
Decision Making
The results of the personality tests allowed me to realise how focusing on both my strengths and weaknesses could help to benefit the partnership. My strengths as a motivator means that I should be the one who continually drives to move the team forwards, while at the same time always listening to and encouraging the opinions of my fellow team member. However I should be sure to make my opinions known and not be overly concerned on only the needs of others.
